Norse Discourse: The Valkyries

First, I’d like to thank all the readers that chimed in during the Conducting Some Research post.  I knew we had a lot of knowledgeable readers when it comes to mythology, but I wasn’t sure how many would be willing to discuss it here at Brat-halla.  Well, that’s what this is about… discussing mythology.  I’ll be making this a regular occurrence here at the site to open discussions and share different stories about specific topics in mythology.  First off, here are the rules of engagement (though not really rules… more like suggestions… mild suggestions):

  1. Share something.  Everyone will have their favorite stories dealing with a topic but I’d also like to see some people share discussions about stories/legends/tales dealing with the topic that might not be commonly known or stuff that’s strange but fun.  Share things about how this particular topic inspired you.  It’s all open as long as you try to keep to the topic at hand.
  2. Be perfectly human.  Your comment doesn’t have to be perfect.  If you have references/resources you can cite, that’s fine but not required.  We’re going back to the oral tradition of mythology here and passing along stories and passing along inspirations from those stories.  If you don’t remember the myth, legend or tale exactly, just say so and then let it flow from the keyboard.  Since we have a lot of people here that have taken many different paths to their knowledge of mythology, I’m expecting lots of fun stuff.
  3. Have fun!  This is actually rule #1, but I listed it last so it stays fresh in everyone’s mind.

And what would a good host be like if he didn’t lead off:

In the book Viking & Norse Mythology (by H.R. Ellis Davidson), there’s a passage in the section on The Valkyries that inspired a story idea I had pitched a long time back:

Protective spirits of this kind were said to attach themselves to the kings and princes who worshipped Odin, giving them help and counsel and bringing good fortune in battle, while at death they received them as their ‘husbands’.

I thought of Valkyries walking the paths of Midgard and allying with the rich and noble to counsel and train their sons to be valiant warriors and worthy of the halls of Valhalla.  And then I thought, what if they were still trying to do that job in today’s society?

Thus began a crazy ride in my head of the last Valkyrie on Midgard stubbornly refusing to give up and return to Asgard until she trained a warrior to die a valiant death in battle.  But there’s really no need for battle amongst the affluent members of society.  At least… not with the good ones.

She stumbled across a boy one day as her options were growing slimmer.  A boy with a noble heart and stubborn tenacity for chivalry (that got him beat up a lot).  And he was a member of a rich and noble family… a crime boss’ son.  It was close enough.  She volunteered to “toughen the boy up” and teach him to defend himself.  And succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations.

Then he died.  In battle against a rival organization.  Defending his comrades from certain death so they could finish their job.  And delighted, she came back for him to raise him from the dead and lead him to Valhalla.  But unfortunately, the path to Valhalla had been sealed by someone on Earth… someone who didn’t want the gods interfering until it was much too late to stop her plans.  And the only people capable of stopping her before she takes over the world are the last Valkyrie and the last Einherjar on Midgard.

####

Now, it’s your turn.  I’m eager to hear from all of you.  Remember, have fun!

Thor Convergence: The Intrigue!

What’s funny is now that they’re working on that movie for Marvel, Thor is all over the place in the news.  I’m waiting for the Happy Meals with little plastic Mjollnirs and some Thor Saturday morning cartoon action (sadly, it won’t be a Brat-halla one… time to finally file away that animation series bible).  But it is fun seeing all this Thor news (movie and otherwise)… even if some of it unintentionally puts me into giggle fits:

  • Over at MTV’s Splash Page, they currently have a typo in the Thor movie casting call.  “A natural warrior with a quick charming wit who must be genuinely and sever[e]ly humbled before becoming the compassionate, mature her of our film.”  My first thought on seeing the error was, “What? Are they going to end the movie by having Thor disguise himself as Freya to reclaim Mjollnir from Thrym?  That.  Would.  Be.  Awesome.”  But no, just a typo.  [correction: Splash Page let us know they copy-n-pasted the item from the source they had linked to, so the typo was there originally.  Still, all the fun is in that one typo.  ^_^]
  • “Thor was founded huddled in the corner near the aviary on Saturday morning.” Thor being a Great Horned Owl who someone tried to set free even though he’s in captivity because he was too injured to survive in the wild prior to coming to the aviary.
  • What’s up with Thor and owls? Another Owl (from Rice University) nicknamed Thor (by his teammates) is doing pretty well for himself at the NFL combine.  James “Thor” Casey tied for first among tight ends in the bench press and second for tight ends in the vertical jump.  111 receptions and over 1300 yards last year in college… I think we’re gonna hear more from Thor in the future.  Hmm… mid-20s and powerfully built… I wonder if he can act.
  • Norway’s Thor Hansen leads the pack in one of the European Poker Tours.  And Thor Hushovd won stage 3 of the Tour of California.

It’s like the universe is having some big Thor convergence out there.  And I like it.

Links (Not Sausage)

Well, we’ve wanted to put up a links section for a while now, but just one thing got in the way… modifying all the code to work with all the tweaks I made to the site when we first started out.

Now, we have those links up and I’d like to give some special thanks to some sites that have said some nice things about us in the past (and it’s definitely time we returned the favor):

  1. Evil Inc – Brad called Seth’s artwork scrumptious and sent some traffic our way.  I got a chance to meet him at a convention a while back and he’s a great guy.
  2. TV Tropes – Thanks to the Brat-halla readers putting us in as webcomic examples of some of these entertainment conventions.  It was really fun finding out that Frigg was listed in the Hot Shounen Mom trope.
  3. Comics 101 – This link is to thank Chris Ryall who gave Brat-halla the greenlight when he was the editor at one of Kevin Smith’s websites.  Thanks to Chris, you have Brat-halla on the web and still going strong today.
  4. Atland – If you enjoy humor and sword & sorcery tales, this is the place for you (warning though, it does lean more towards an R-rating at times).  I’ve also met Nate at a convention (also a great guy) plus he’s the person I buy fonts from (double bonus).
  5. The Johnny Bacardi Show – Put us in a review with Warren Ellis’ Freakangels (and it was an honor to be mentioned in the same post).
  6. Digital Strips – We’ve linked to them in a blog post before, but we’re gonna do it again anyways for the nice review they gave us in their podcast.
  7. Pop Syndicate – They gave us a nice little review (plus, I also have a series of articles out on their site).

More links will get added as we go and there will definitely be a lot more Norse and mythology references added.

Conducting Some Research

Hey Brat-halla readers,

Curiosity caught up with me recently (don’t worry, I’m not a cat) and I was wondering something… how familiar with Norse mythology were you before finding Brat-halla?  If you were familiar with the mythos, how did you learn about it (books, shows, comics, etc)?

I’d consider myself very familiar with Norse mythology before my Brat-halla days, and most of my knowledge was originally from books.  In the fifth and sixth grade, the public library was right across the street from my school, and I would go there every day after school to read (as one of those scrawny straight-A students, I found the place to be mysteriously bully-free) .  After I got through reading all the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drews and Encyclopedia Browns (the mystery phase hit between my science fiction and fantasy novel phases), I drifted into the mythology books.  That’s where it all began for me.

Easier Archives… The Norse Gods Demanded It

Well, they didn’t actually demand it, but Thor did the quivering lip thing.  Of course, I gave in and got to coding.  Now, there are easier to navigate archives (that shouldn’t break every time I upgrade WordPress).

Beneath the comic and to the right on the Brat-halla.com website, there is a section called “Storylines”.  These storylines are all listed in order of appearance (aside from the hodge-podge categories containing the single page comics and Hod’s Comic) and clicking on any storyline link will take you to a single page with links to all of the comic pages that make up the storyline.

I hope this makes reading (and referencing) the site easier for everyone.

Next up: individual character pages.  I think I’ll put up one or two a week as I get them done.
